Start with the one question a shelf cannot answer for you: what is missing from this grow?

It sounds obvious. But a new product can arrive with a convincing name, a photograph and a reason to add it at every stage. Before long, the feeding plan grows by habit.

Taking a few minutes to look at the whole routine gives you a better starting point.

Write down what is already there

Include the growing medium and any amendments, the source water, the base feed and every supplement. Record the actual rate and frequency of use.

Do not stop at the product names. Look at the contributions: essential nutrition, seaweed extract, amino inputs, humic materials, calcium and magnesium, microorganisms. Different products may share some of those contributions.

Name the reason for changing something

Perhaps you want to compare a combined biostimulant with several separate ingredients. Perhaps a water analysis raises a question about the mineral supply. Perhaps the plant is showing a change you do not yet understand.

Those are different situations. A product comparison needs ingredient and use information. A suspected deficiency needs an assessment of the grow. Curiosity can justify a planned evaluation, but it should not be presented as proof that the old routine is inadequate.

Look at the full cost

Work out what the proposed product adds to the amount you use and the amount you spend. If it replaces something, include that change. If it is an addition, show it as an addition.

There is no reason to hide a higher bill if the grower is deliberately choosing to evaluate a product. There is every reason to understand it beforehand.

Make the change something you can learn from

Keep a record of the starting conditions. Where practical, compare similar plants or areas while keeping the rest of the routine consistent. Note neutral or disappointing results as carefully as the encouraging ones.

A better-informed decision might be to add something, replace something or change nothing. All three can be useful outcomes.
