Crazy 101 / The grower handbook

Your water is an ingredient.

The same feed can begin with very different water.

Before comparing feeding routines, compare what comes out of the tap. Compare product measurements alongside your feed chart.

pH

The acidity or basicity of the sample at measurement.

Alkalinity

The water’s acid-neutralising capacity. It is not another name for pH.

EC

A conductivity reading—not an ingredient list.

Minerals

Read calcium, magnesium, sodium and chloride individually.

Two waters can share a pH and react differently.

Starting pH alone does not describe buffering. A water with greater alkalinity can require more acid to produce a similar pH change. Knowing only “my water is pH 8” does not tell us the final pH after adding a particular feed.

Make your report useful.

  1. Keep the source, sampling date and laboratory name.
  2. Keep units beside every result. Alkalinity expressed as CaCO₃ and bicarbonate are different reporting bases.
  3. Record the complete recipe and water volume.
  4. Measure the finished mix and note when the reading was taken.
  5. Repeat consistently when the source or recipe changes.

This is a useful first conversation with us: your water report, medium, current feed, crop stage and what you are observing. A pH number by itself leaves too much unanswered.

See the difference for yourself.

Compare our separate-product measurements in tap and purified water. Use the results to understand the tests, then measure your own complete mix.
